Lyngen Bike - Norway

Mountainbike Norway

SINGLETRACKS IN NORTHERN NORWAY - TOP-CLASS BIKEFEELING. According to the outdoor-scene's law, in the summer, mountain bikers are happiest where free riders and ski tourers run riot in the winter. And vice versa. This is true in the Alps as well as in Norway. We from YellowTRAVEL like to come back to places where we have been skiing and snowboarding for years, and where we know each slope and knoll like the back of our hand, even when there is no snow.
Lyngen, Norway's hottest freeriding and ski touring region, is very much to our taste when it comes to skiing. Now we want to check it out on our bikes as well, which will make us absolute trend-setters. Biking in Norway is still pretty new and special. If you're looking for wide, smooth fire roads for the climb, like the ones that exist in the Alps, you'll be disappointed. You have to work hard, pedal and often even hike your bike to the top. When you’ve reached the top you'll feel like when you take the skins off your skies in winter: incredible views over mountains and fjords offer a taste of the grand descent on flowy and technical trails down to the beach. The setting - the ocean, the fjords, nature's play of colors and sometimes a rainbow which lasts for hours- is sovereign and incomparable to the winter perspectives. Both winter and summer feelings are grand and memorable ones. One should experience both. We will spend our nights in small but comfortable huts by the sea, including half-board and sauna. The cold dip in the ocean after a sauna session will be the icing on the cake during this incomparable bike trip.
Our first trip will take place during the STIFESTIVAL, the largest mountain bike festival in Northern Norway.

Day 1- Arrival. Flights to Tromsø (TOS). Once everybody has arrived we will take the two hour crossing to Lyngen and our "beach house" in the Lyngenfjord. The journey will offer fascinating first impressions of the fjord landscapes of Norway.

Day 2-7. Fantastic daily bike trips to destinations around our base. The mountainous landscape around Lyngenfjord is very diverse and is heavily influenced by glaciers. Sparse forests and shrubs can only be found in the lower elevations. There is a relatively well-defined trail system. There will be no forest roads but trails in various grades of difficulty. Most departure points are accessible by car. We might even take the ferry to explore other places. The region around our base, Skibotn, is known for its dry mesoclimate with clear skies, calcareous pine forests and lush vegetation. The dry climate favors the presence of northern lights, which is why there is an astrophysical observatory in Skibotn.
Another positive side effect of the dry climate are mostly dry, grippy trails, which is quite unusual for Northern Norway.
On Saturday we will all return to Tromsø together. Because we don't want to miss any opportunities, we will take advantage of the day and either take our bikes on the trails of the Lyngen Alps or go for a ride somewhere along the way.
Back in Tromsø, we will check into our Hotel, put on our nice clothes and wander around the alleys and streets of the city. Over a final dinner we will let our bike week unwind.

Day 8 - day of departure. Breakfast at the Hotel, transfer to the airport and return flight.

Bike rides in Norway are not comparable to the ones in the Alps. Before you can hop on your bike for the downhill, you have to pedal, carry or hike your bike to the top. On the downhill we will find ourselves on the less traveled, technical trails.
The descent offers stunning views and impressions of the unique landscape. Sometimes we will go on several smaller rides on one day, so that we maximize our experience of the fjords on Northern Norway. The weather can change quickly and we might start out in pouring rain and end our day with the sun warming up our descent to the ocean.
We will lodge in small fishing huts right by the sea and can enjoy delicious local food.
Besides biking we want you to experience the unique landscape, the far-out feeling and the certainty to experience something very special with this program.

01 Arctic Lyngen Seacamp

01 Arctic Lyngen Seecamp
The Arctic Lyngen Seecamp is a small conglomerate of four little huts located in Djupvik on the east side of Lyngenfjord. High mountains rise behind the huts and in front the ocean is roaring.
The view extends over the fjord and reaches the glaciers of the Lyngen Alps.
Rebuilt in 2012, the cottages offer every imaginable amenities: two double bedrooms in each hut, a bathroom and living room with a kitchen. Wi-Fi and a washing machine are included. In front of the cottages there is a small sauna, a hot tub and the catering hut where we will take our daily breakfasts and dinners prepared by our host and chef Jens.
